CRL Network Services Carries the Traffic of the Record-Breaking Walnut Creek CDROM FTP Site

Walnut Creek CDROM, One of the Largest Public FTP Archives in the World, Sets Traffic Record Using FreeBSD and Colocating on CRL's High-Speed Internet Network

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 1998-- CRL Network Services announced today that its network is carrying the traffic of the record-breaking Walnut Creek CDROM FTP site.

Walnut Creek CDROM's server downloaded the most software in one day, 417 gigabytes of files, on Tuesday, July 28, 1998. The record was achieved using FreeBSD on only one server colocated on CRL's national Internet backbone.

Walnut Creek CDROM runs the largest public FTP archive, and every month, more than three million individual users download the latest computer software ranging from games to complete operating systems from Walnut Creek CDROM's FTP site.

Walnut Creek CDROM set the record of transferring 417 gigabytes of files in one day, surpassing Microsoft Corporation's [Nasdaq:MSFT - news] record of transferring approximately 350 gigabytes of files per day during the Windows95 release. Microsoft used more than 40 server machines to achieve the previous record, while Walnut Creek CDROM used a single 200MHz Intel Pentium Pro processor running FreeBSD.

``Walnut Creek CDROM was able to break this download record because the system was running FreeBSD in conjunction with CRL's high-performance, bandwidth-intensive Internet network,'' said David Greenman, system manager at Walnut Creek CDROM. FreeBSD is a UNIX operating system that is very popular with Internet servers, and Walnut Creek CDROM colocates their Internet server on CRL's state-of-the-art, national network.

Of CRL's various levels of colocation service, Walnut Creek CDROM uses the 100Mbps Dedicated Fast Ethernet service for its connection to CRL's national Internet backbone. The Fast Ethernet service enables Walnut Creek CDROM to physically colocate its FTP server in CRL's facility.

This direct connection to the Internet offers 24 X 7 network management, considerable savings, and the high bandwidth and redundant connectivity necessary for the delivery of Walnut Creek CDROM's high-volume Internet applications.

Walnut Creek CDROM was founded in August 1991 by its current president and owner Robert Bruce. Since the beginning, Walnut Creek CDROM has maintained a philosophy of creating superior quality CDROM software titles at a reasonable price to the consumer. Walnut Creek CDROM has also made an extremely large commitment to maintaining ftp.cdrom.com, one of the busiest download sites on the Internet.
